Exploring the Mind

I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list

A Retrospective, by Athena Filias

My name is Athena Filias, and I am a graduate of Florida International University (B.A Psychology). I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology, with a concentration in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); a field that I find intellectually complex yet fascinating and deeply rewarding to rehabilitate.

The purpose of this website is to serve as my e-portfolio, where you can learn more about me as I document my global learning experiences. This includes notable highlights from being a 2025 GHSA research fellow in Mysore, India. Here, I reflect on meaningful learning experiences through various media such as reflective essays, a mini documentary, and photography storytelling. I will also provide an in-depth account, detailing research I have conducted on how cultural beliefs affect medical students’ perceptions about their ability to address LGBTQ+ patients’ needs.

Lastly, I will also describe other ways FIU has allowed me to enrich my perspective through global learning classes and experiences (such as service, study abroad, and other research experiences) and how they have shaped me into becoming a more well-rounded and culturally competent future Psychologist.
